The concept of IIT was first introduced by Sir Nalini Ranjan Sarkar (an Indian businessman, industrialist, economist and public leader). The first Indian Institute of Technology was established in the year 1950 in Kharagpur. On Shri Sarkar’s suggestion, the Government then decided to establish more institutes and the Institutes of Technology at Madras, Kanpur and Delhi were established.
Indian Institute of Technology Delhi is one of the 23 IITs created to be Centres of Excellence for training, research and development in science, engineering and technology In India.
IIT Delhi offers Bachelor of Technology programs in various fields as well as dual degree B.Tech-cum-M.Tech programs. The admission to these programs is done through Joint Entrance Examination – Advanced. Since its inception, over 35000 have graduated from lIT Delhi in various disciplines including Engineering, Physical Sciences, Management and Humanities & Social Sciences. These alumni today work as scientists, technologists, business managers and entrepreneurs. There are several alumni who have moved away from their original disciplines and have taken to administrative services, active politics or are with NGOs. The campus is also close to other educational institutions such as the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) and Indian Statistical Institute (ISI).
Campus is in itself a green city, with gardens, lawns and residential complexes for students.
The student has to live in the campus till the completion of their course. The student residential zone is divided into two main sectors—one for boys hostels and another for girls hostels.
